Eligibility

All applicants who wish to study at Akita International University for one or two semesters as exchange (non degree-seeking students) must meet all of the following requirements:

Enrollment Status

Applicants?must be enrolled at their home institution?both at the time of application and during their stay at Akita International University, and have?at least two semesters of grades?from that institution?reflected on their transcript by AIU’s application deadline? (April 1 for Fall semester admission/ November 1 for Spring semester admission)*.

The requirement underlined above varies for the following students:

*Students in a 3-year degree program: They must have completed at least one semester at their home institution, with grades for that semester reflected on their transcript by AIU’s application deadline.

*Students who have transferred to their current institution: They must have completed at least one semester at their current institution, with grades for that semester reflected on their transcript by AIU’s application deadline. Transcripts from previous institutions are not accepted.

*Students in a Master’s program: They must have completed at least one semester in their Master’s program at their current institution, with grades for that semester reflected on their transcript by AIU’s application deadline. Transcripts from undergraduate programs are not accepted, regardless of whether they completed their undergraduate program at their current institution or elsewhere.

Students with cases not listed above must ask their home universities to consult with AIU in advance with any questions regarding their eligibility.

GPA

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.50 or higher (4.00 scale).

English Proficiency

Applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency that meets one of the minimum standards below:
Exemptions: The requirement to submit proof of English language proficiency is waived for Native speakers of English and students enrolled in an English-taught degree program in a country where English is the primary language of higher education.

Acceptable Certificates

International English Language Testing Service (IELTS?)6.0 or above
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL? Test)71 or above (iBT)
530 or above (PBT/ITP)
Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC? Test)785 or above

If it is impossible to obtain one of the certificates above by the application deadline or you have other questions about English language proficiency requirements or whether you are qualified for exemption, please contact your home university study abroad office.
